HEART OF A TIGER

875 Washington Street, New York, NY 10014

September 7th-17th, 2023 | Opening Reception: Thursday, Sept 7th, 6-9pm

Heart of a Tiger is an exhibition of work by 18 emerging, female-identifying artists in support of Planned Parenthood with an accompanying text by Marilyn Minter. The work – comprised of painting, photography, and sculpture –will be exhibited in the gallery space at 875 Washington Street for 10 days. 80% of proceeds will go directly to the Planned Parenthood Action Fund, which works to protect and advance access to safe, legal abortion, healthcare, and reproductive rights.

In the United States in the mid-1940s, Lee Krasner described fellow artist Elaine de Kooning as “more than just a beauty.” According to Lee, Elaine had “the heart of a tiger:” she navigated life’s challenges with grace and poise while asserting her confidence and power. She had goals and ambitions; she was independent. She believed that any woman could and should control her own path. In 2023, a woman cannot control her own path. In 39 out of the 50 U.S. states, abortion is either illegal, hostile, or not protected, and access to safe abortion extends far beyond matters of pregnancy. A woman’s right to choose ensures that she can shape her life as she pleases, in alignment with her own values, goals, and circumstances. A woman’s right to choose ensures that she can control her own path.

Heart of a Tiger exists to support a woman’s right to choose. Spanning a range of mediums and perspectives, the work encompasses the diversity of the female experience and the importance of autonomy. The exhibition aims to encourage open dialogue about abortion access and challenge stigmas. It intends to embody the ethos of Elaine de Kooning, the spirit of Lee Krasner, and the audacity of the many other women throughout history who have fought for gender equality.
